According to the latest Ethernet roadmap from the Ethernet Alliance, network transmission speeds are rapidly evolving. AI, enterprise, and campus networks are gradually transitioning from 40G and 100G to 400G. Meanwhile, telecommunications operators and data center cloud service providers have already upgraded from 400G to 800G and even 1.6T. Currently, 400G remains the dominant solution for AI data centers (AIDC) in terms of computing power and network infrastructure.

Overview of 400G Transmission Technology
Achieving 400G transmission in data centers typically relies on multi-core parallel optical fibers.
Here are the two main technological approaches:
- NRZ Encoding With NRZ (Non-Return-to-Zero) encoding, each optical fiber channel supports a maximum transmission rate of 25G. To achieve 400G, 16 fibers are required for transmitting and another 16 for receiving, totaling 32 fibers.
- Drawback: While theoretically feasible, the interface design for 400GBase-SR16 is highly complex, making it less practical for real-world applications.
- PAM-4 Encoding PAM-4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation-4) encoding increases the transmission rate of each optical fiber channel to 50G. This allows 400G bidirectional parallel transmission using only 8 fibers and a standard MPO-16 connector.
- Advantage: PAM-4 technology makes 400GBASE-SR8 a more efficient and practical alternative to 400GBASE-SR16.
By leveraging PAM-4 encoding, data centers can achieve higher efficiency and simplified infrastructure for 400G transmission. This positions 400GBASE-SR8 as the preferred solution in high-speed optical networking

Applications and Advantages of MPO-16 Connectors
The MPO-16 fiber optic connector is the ideal choice for 400G transmission and is expected to become the mainstream standard for high-speed transmission in the future, including 800G and 1.6T. Compared to the older MPO-12 connector, the MPO-16 introduces key design improvements:

•Offset Key Design
This design prevents the incorrect insertion of an MPO-12 male connector into an MPO-16 female connector, which could lead to end-face damage. This improvement significantly enhances the reliability and compatibility of the connector.
